What is IP Telephony?

What is it?

Voice over the Internet or IP Telephony is at the forefront of this technology - basically transporting voice over the Internet ether.  An IP (Internet Protocol) telephony gateway, converts voice communications into pieces of data, which is then sent over an IP network, or private Internet.  At its destination the communication data is converted back into voice.

How does it work?

Users will speak into a telephone that is connected to a PBX system.  The PBX then routes the call over the Internet and sends it to the receivers PBX, which then rings through their phone line.  No long distance carrier is needed.
