IP Telephony

What it is:

Voice over Internet Protocol - commonly referred to as VOIP - is the ability to convert Voice into Data to transport the data across the Internet and convert the Data back into Voice. Your computer can perform over the internet virtually every communications task that traditional communication devices already do, such as receiving and transmitting data, connecting to outside services, fax, email and video conferencing.

Today, technological advances allow your computer to process telephone calls with Computer Telephone Integration (CTI) technology, which links your two most important business tools: your computer and telephone. The two become one seamless IP environment that fulfills virtually all the communications needs of your business.

VOIP telephony is at the forefront of this technology transporting voice over the Internet. IP Telephony can be as simple as a PC running a software-based IP phone connected to a Mitel Communications Director IP PBX. Or as complex as a large organization utilizing their WAN (Wide-Area-Network) to allow users to route typical long distance calls over the internet and out a local branch as a local call.

How it works:

VoIP Telephony is very simple - Users will speak into a telephone that is connected to an IP-based PBX system. The PBX then routes the call over the Internet and sends it to the receivers IP-Based PBX, which then rings their telephone. No long distance carrier is needed for calls made over the business Wide Area Network (WAN).

How to leverage it:

VOIP phone service can be used from the desktop in the office, to the desktop at the home office or hotel room. It can also be used to allow users within an organization to extension dial each other regardless of which office they are in. Depending on the business needs, a VoIP telephony solution can be leveraged where it makes the most strategic sense as not all devices need to be VOIP.
